Our Story
Built From What Plants Already Know
James and his friends, Lou and Jenny, wanted to approach this differently. How do plants protect themselves? Well, with a peel. Plants, like us, have their skin (or peel) – technically called the plant cuticle – to protect them against moisture loss, oxidation, and infection. What are those peels made of? The important parts are made of fatty acids, glycerides. These ingredients are universally found in the peels, pulp, and seeds of all plants – including plants we already eat. So, the idea is: can we use these harmless plant-based ingredients, applying them as a thin layer to the surface of fresh fruits and vegetables in order to reinforce the existing natural peel? In doing so, could we help retain peak flavor, texture, and nutrients for longer without reliance on refrigeration, pesticides, waxes, or plastics? And that's how Apeel Sciences was born. We’re on a mission to make better quality, more sustainable, and longer-lasting produce a reality—creating value throughout the supply chain and a healthier future for us all.
